What the iPhone Duo is

Announced by Apple in September 2026, iPhone Duo is the first foldable iPhone. Closed, it is close to the size of a passport and works through a 5.4 inch outer display. Opened, it reveals a 7.6 inch inner display, the largest ever placed on an iPhone. Both panels share the same aspect ratio, so content scales as the device opens and closes instead of jumping between layouts.

The two displays

The outer screen is built for everything you do on a phone with one hand: messages, calls, maps, quick camera shots. The inner screen is built for the tasks that usually push people toward a tablet: reading, split view with two apps side by side, long documents, video. Apple describes the inner panel as using a nano texture cover layer that reduces glare and makes the fold less visible, and both displays support ProMotion, Always On and high outdoor brightness.

Performance, camera and connectivity

The Duo runs on the A20 Pro chip, the same generation that powers Apple's Pro iPhones this year, and ships with iOS 27 and the current generation of Apple Intelligence. The rear camera system pairs a 48MP Fusion main camera with a 48MP Fusion ultra wide, and the inner display carries a camera hidden beneath the panel. It is eSIM only, and Apple has said Apple Pencil support arrives later in the launch year.

Who a foldable actually fits

A foldable is a different shape, not simply a better phone. It makes sense for people who read a lot on the move, who juggle two apps at once, who travel with a phone and would rather not also carry a tablet. If your day is mostly short interactions on a small screen, the extra surface may go unused. Naming your own use case first keeps the decision yours rather than the launch calendar's.

Apple opened iPhone Duo preorders in October 2026, later than the iPhone 18 Pro models, with availability starting on October 23.
