What changed in AirPods 5

Announced in September 2026, AirPods 5 bring Active Noise Cancellation to Apple's standard AirPods line as a feature of both versions rather than a step up option. Apple rebuilt the acoustics with a multiport architecture and an updated Adaptive EQ, and says the noise cancellation removes up to fifty percent more external noise than the previous generation with ANC, while keeping the open ear shape without silicone tips.

Noise cancellation in an open ear design

This is the unusual part. Most noise cancelling earbuds seal the ear canal with a tip; AirPods keep the familiar open shape, which many people find more comfortable for long wear and easier to keep in during movement. Alongside cancellation there is an improved Transparency mode for hearing voices and surroundings, Adaptive Audio that blends the two depending on your environment, and Conversation Awareness, which lowers media volume when you start speaking.

Sound, Adaptive EQ and recording

The redesigned acoustic architecture and updated Adaptive EQ are aimed at delivering consistent sound across different ear shapes, with Personalized Spatial Audio for a more immersive result. Apple also brought studio quality audio recording to this generation, which matters if you record voice notes, interviews or video audio directly from the earbuds.

Live Translation and Siri AI

Paired with an Apple Intelligence capable iPhone running iOS 27, AirPods 5 support Live Translation. You download the languages you need in the Translate app, then start a session by pressing both stems, asking Siri, or using the Action button on iPhone. Translated speech plays in your ears while the iPhone helps the other person follow along. The same pairing brings Siri AI, including head gestures to respond without speaking.

Choosing between the two versions

Both versions include noise cancellation, so the difference is not sound. The higher configuration adds a wireless charging case, longer total battery life, on stem volume control and a Find My speaker, and it charges through Apple Watch chargers, Qi compatible chargers and USB-C. Decide by how you charge and whether you want volume swipes, not by expecting more cancellation from the higher tier.
